Karl Loewenstein, founder and president of Sturgeon Spirits, taught history at UW-Oshkosh for 21 years before retiring in January 2024 to pursue his passion for craft distilling.
A longtime Oshkosh resident, Karl fell in love with Lake Winnebago's sturgeon spearing tradition after moving to the city. That connection to local heritage drives his commitment to the community today. Karl brings his educator's gift for storytelling to every tour and tasting.
For Karl, opening Sturgeon Spirits wasn't just about making spirits—it was about creating a gathering place where neighbors connect and Wisconsin traditions are celebrated.
The Ready Room
The Ready Room at Sturgeon Spirits is Oshkosh's only craft distillery event venue, offering an unforgettable experience where aviation heritage meets celebration. Accommodating up to 45 guests, this distinctive space features authentic aviation-themed décor and vintage warbird artwork honoring Oshkosh's legacy as home to EAA AirVenture.
Whether planning an intimate wedding, corporate event, or private party, your guests will enjoy access to over 180 craft spirits distilled on-site and signature cocktails inspired by Lake Winnebago's sturgeon spearing tradition. Sustainability
At Sturgeon Spirits, sustainability is built into everything we do. Our EV charging stations welcome electric vehicle drivers. Inside, reclaimed wood from historic Oshkosh factories creates our distinctive space.
We seal our bottles with natural wooden corks and craft spirits from locally-sourced Wisconsin ingredients through partnerships with Sunken Paddle Ciderworks and Oaks Candy. We're committed to sustainable practices that honor both Wisconsin's heritage and its future—just like the conservation efforts protecting Lake Winnebago's ancient sturgeon.
Community
At Sturgeon Spirits, community is who we are. As Oshkosh's first distillery since the 1920s, we're rooted in Lake Winnebago's sturgeon spearing tradition. We support local charities including Sturgeon for Tomorrow and Old Glory Honor Flights through our Squadron Spirits line.
